Want to be Self-Employed? First, check your HRV...

Being self-employed or owning your own business sounds like a good idea. 4.8 million People in the UK are working for themselves according to the office of National Statistics. And what’s not to like? You can grow an idea from scratch and make it a profitable venture that can give you the freedom and flexibility you are after.

And this is all true. But there are some things to look out for if you are going down this path.

Being self employed for 4 years, even as a Stress-Less Coach, managing my mental health has been a massive part of my life.

The main issue that arises are economic but other factors such as isolation, irregular hours, and inability to switch off also contribute to creating a need to build your mental health and fitness.

There has been many times when I have worked to 3am completing work, even though I have to wake up early for a client or a meeting. You feel like you can’t take time off because time off means time where you do not get paid.

Statistics show that 37% of all work-related ill health and 45% of working days lost to ill health is because of stress for employed people. Imagine being self employed and still feeling ill health, what do you do then??

Looking after your mental fitness and wellbeing is therefore a priority to anyone who is self employed or is looking to become self employed.

But now we can start to look at the effect that stress is having on our body, even before it manifests into a problem. This way, we can spot the signs from physiological biomarkers and prevent a health problem.

What is HRV?

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the physiological phenomenon of variation in the time interval between heartbeats. It is measured by the variation in the beat-to-beat interval. The greater the HRV score, the greater amount of resources (energy) the body can utilise. This means the energy your body has outweighs the load of physiological stress your body is under. On the other side, the lower the HRV score, the physiological stress is overloading the body’s resources to recover.

Being self employed, we do not have the benefit of healthcare provided by an employer. It is up to you to look after yourself.

The measure of HRV can be the missing link to looking after your personal health. It can give you the statistics you need (stress, recovery, rest etc) to be able to build balance in your life.

What is CALM Coaching?

Stress-Less Fitness have launched a programme called CALM Coaching. It is a programme designed to build mental and physical fitness. Its key message is to gain control of mind and strengthen the body using stress reduction and stress resilience building.

For the stress reduction, we have a device which measures the activity of the brain when meditating. From this, we receive a CALM score (percentage of CALM that was achieved during the meditation). From this, we can see and improve the meditation practice/mental relaxation.

For stress resilience, we use a form of physical exercise adapted by Stress-Less Fitness called Stress Adaptive Exercises. With this, we use the physical stress of exercise and train our body to respond better to stress by improving how quickly we recover from stress. We will therefore be able to firstly, take on more of a load of stress and secondly, be able to recover more effectively from stress.

Our stress detection watch is powered by Suunto and gives you real time feedback on whether your body is ‘Stressed’, ‘Active’ i.e exercising, ‘Inactive’ or ‘Recovering’. We use this to create a tailor made bespoke plan.
